About Hunza

Hunza is the most visited valley in the north for good reason: forts, glaciers, turquoise lakes and the Karakoram Highway all within a day's drive of Karimabad.

Getting there

By road, take the Hazara Motorway and either the Babusar Pass (June to October, about 12–13 hours) or the Karakoram Highway via Besham (all year, 15–17 hours). By air, PIA flies Islamabad–Gilgit, but flights are weather-dependent and cancel often; Gilgit to Karimabad is 2 hours by road.

Best time to go

April for cherry and apricot blossom, May to August for warm days, and late October for the autumn colours — which is now as busy as summer.

Busiest (and priciest): May, June, July, August, October.

Tips that save money

  • Gilgit flights cancel in bad weather more often than not — keep a spare day and do not book a connecting flight home the same day.
  • Carry cash. ATMs exist in Aliabad and Karimabad but run dry on peak weekends.
  • Fuel up in Gilgit or Aliabad before heading to Khunjerab; there is nothing past Sost.
