About Naran & Kaghan

Naran and Kaghan are the closest true mountain valleys to Islamabad and Lahore, which makes them the classic first trip north — and very busy on summer weekends.

Getting there

Take the Hazara Motorway to Mansehra, then the road through Balakot and Kaghan: about 6–7 hours from Islamabad. Coasters run from Pir Wadhai in Rawalpindi.

Best time to go

June to September. The road and hotels open around May and shut again by November.

Busiest (and priciest): June, July, August. Effectively closed: December, January, February, March.

Tips that save money

  • Avoid Eid and long weekends if you can — the single road through Naran gridlocks and hotel prices jump by half.
  • Jeeps to Saif-ul-Malook run a fixed union rate; agree it before you get in.
  • If you are driving, start from Islamabad before 6 am to beat the Mansehra traffic.
