About Chitral & Kalash
Chitral is remote, culturally distinct and far less crowded than the Gilgit-Baltistan valleys — and the Kalash valleys are unlike anywhere else in Pakistan.
Getting there from Lahore
Take the M-2 motorway to Islamabad (about 4.5 hours), then head north. Daewoo and Faisal Movers run the Lahore–Islamabad leg every hour.
The Swat Motorway to Chakdara, then Dir and the Lowari Tunnel: about 9 hours from Islamabad. From Chitral it is about 1.5 hours by jeep to Bumburet.
Best time to go
May to September. Time it with Chilam Joshi in mid-May or Uchal in August to see a Kalash festival.
Busiest (and priciest): May, June, July, August.
Tips that save money
- Be respectful when photographing Kalash people, especially women — ask first.
