About Neelum Valley

Neelum Valley runs along the Neelum river into Kashmir: dense forest, wooden villages and alpine lakes, closer to Islamabad than most people realise.

Getting there from Peshawar

For Swat and Chitral you can skip Islamabad entirely via the Swat Motorway; for everything else, join the Hazara Motorway at Burhan.

Islamabad to Muzaffarabad via Murree or the Kohala bridge (about 3 hours), then up the Neelum road to Keran and Sharda (another 4 hours).

Best time to go

May to September; Ratti Gali Lake only from July to September.

Busiest (and priciest): May, June, July, August. Effectively closed: December, January, February.

Tips that save money

  • The valley runs close to the Line of Control. Check the current travel advisory before you go.
  • Phone signal beyond Sharda is limited to SCOM and a few local networks.
