About Swat & Kalam

Swat is green, river-fed and easy to reach on the Swat Motorway, with Kalam's forests and lakes at the top of the valley.

Getting there from Peshawar

For Swat and Chitral you can skip Islamabad entirely via the Swat Motorway; for everything else, join the Hazara Motorway at Burhan.

The Swat Motorway from the M-1 makes Mingora about 3 hours from Islamabad, then another 3 hours up the valley to Kalam.

Best time to go

May to September for Kalam and the lakes; December to February for snow at Malam Jabba.

Busiest (and priciest): June, July, August.

Tips that save money

  • The Bahrain–Kalam road is slow and broken in places; allow more time than maps suggest.
  • Mahodand needs a jeep — sedans stop well short of the lake.
